The Ghetto
Brothers were founded by Benjy Melendez and his real
life brothers. This gang had a political motivation to uplift the young
Spanish and Black brothers in their community. Although
they did
start as a gang later on they had more positive goals in mind. Kind of
like "The Young Lords Party", The Ghetto Brothers set their sights
on helping people in their area and
trying to stop the rampart gang
violence that made The Bronx during the 1970's a very dangerous
place to grow up and live. During that time a fellow Ghetto Brother
who was the peacekeeper for the gang was murdered while trying to
settle a beef between other gangs. His name was "Black Benji"
R.I.P. Those responsible for his death were "The Immortals, The
Mongols, & The Black Spades" according to Benjy Melendez. This
Death Had All The Ghetto Brothers from all over uniting trying to
find "Black Benji" Killers. A big truce meeting of all the gangs was set up as a
result of what had happened, In the meeting Benjy Melendez
spoke directly to The Seven Immortals telling them how they had
taken his brother out this world and how the other gangs needed to
unite and stop the senseless killings that were occuring. The Ghetto
Brothers even recorded an album of latin funk soul music back in the
70's - This album is supposed to be reissued this year 2005 - look out
for it, It's a Gang Classic!
In The Late 80's The Ghetto Brothers & The Savage Nomads
formed a Nation in Connecticut called Los Solidos.
Street gangs continue to be involved in the drug trade and drug crimes. Some New York gangs have traded heroin for guns to fight their rivals. It is likely that any drug crime attorney Columbus has been involved in a gang member related case.
